The August issue of Traditional Building includes an article on Quinn Evans’ Palladio Award-winning rehabilitation of Old City Hall.

The national Palladio Awards program, administered by Traditional Building, celebrates outstanding achievement in traditional design. Old City Hall won in the Commercial Renovation and Restoration Over 30,000 Square Feet category.

The article explores our balanced approach to the renovation of this National Historic Landmark in Richmond, Virginia, which houses workspaces for state agencies. Tom Jester, FAIA, FAPT, LEED AP, the principal in charge for the project, describes how we modernized the building while maintaining its historic character. For example, we recreated the lost gas uplights in the atrium chandeliers and torchieres with LED fixtures.

The goal was to restore the space to its original design … while addressing needed upgrades to the interior and systems to meet code and reduce energy consumption.
