Sharing Resources to Maximize Value
Southeast Community Resource Area Master Plan
Southeast Community Resource Area Master Plan
Our master plan for an underutilized superblock celebrates the site’s rich history and consolidates community resources that were formerly scattered across the neighborhood.
The seven-block site was long home to the Huntington School, a 1935 building with a sprawl of later additions. Our plan retains the school’s historic core while replacing deteriorated wings with new facilities: a middle school at one end of the site and a combined library, recreation center, community center, and youth center at the other.
By sharing parking areas, sports fields, a playground and splashpad, and multipurpose rooms among all facilities, our design minimizes duplication—providing the historically underserved community with the greatest value for the city's capital investment.
We are trying to save as much of the history of the area as possible … to give the residents a new school, a community center respecting the history of Huntington High School.
A Proud Legacy
The Huntington School was originally built as a Black high school during the segregation era and later served as a middle school. The city considered demolishing the rundown structure; however, community members told us the school is a beloved neighborhood landmark that they wanted to see preserved. The master plan repurposes it for new generations to enjoy.
The Miller Bailey Center
Our design recasts the Huntington School’s historic core as the entry to a new community hub. Expansions will provide a modern library, a youth center, community rooms, and a recreation center with a gymnasium and indoor pool—all of which will be easily accessible to students from the adjacent middle school.
Huntington Middle School
This state-of-the-art new middle school will accommodate 600 students with the ability to expand to 800. Its 120,000+ sf will provide spaces for traditional classroom instruction as well as learning studios and open collaboration areas. Located at the opposite end of the site from the Miller Bailey Center, the school will share outdoor facilities while maintaining appropriate security.
