From Mill to Museum
Peirce Mill
Peirce Mill
National Park Service's Rock Creek Park
Washington, DC
Our team returned the only remaining 19th-century grist mill site in Washington, DC to operation and transformed the historic building into an authentic demonstration museum. Embracing a holistic approach, we leveraged 21st century technologies and managed cultural resources to recreate the mill race and mill yard and renewed water supply and power.
Our Cultural Landscape Report and Historic Structures Report guided our documentation of the site’s history and evolution, providing a roadmap for its restoration. Encompassing site work for both interpretive and visitor needs, the reintroduced historic road trace provides an accessible path to the mill and a modern multi-purpose bike and pedestrian trail throughout the property.
