How can insightful architectural design enhance a learning environment? Just ask Cho Benn Holback + Associates, a Quinn Evans Company in Baltimore - winners of AIA Maryland’s 2018 Excellence in Design Awards!

The AIA Maryland Excellence in Design Awards celebrates architects, building owners, contractors, and students for their outstanding achievements in architectural design. Joining this year’s list of honorees, QEA’s Cho Benn Holback + Associates team received two Citation Awards in recognition of their exceptional work on the Coppin State University Connector and The Pilot School.

The Coppin State University Connector redefines ordinary campus accessibility upgrades by taking the opportunity to create a landmark structure. A new glass pavilion completes the existing pedestrian bridge over North Avenue, safely connecting the two sides of campus across its busy East-West corridor. The naturally ventilated building provides an enclosed stair, glass elevator, seating areas, and landscaped entry plaza. Click here to explore this project.

The Pilot School’s child-centered learning environment is focused on individualized therapeutic programs for children ages 5-14 experiencing language-based learning problems.
With this in mind, their new facility overlooks the Brandywine Creek State Park, serving the school’s mission to connect students with nature to improve their academic performance and overall health. To reinforce the link between inside and outside, local natural elements are incorporated into the building itself through its landscape-inspired material palette and sustainable design features. This intimate, warm atmosphere includes a range of flexible spaces for art, music, and movement to engage all senses and support specific therapeutic learning goals.
